Named after the Isle of Portland, settlers came to Portland in the first half of the nineteenth-century. Originally rife with corruption and organized crime, Portland would soon make a name for itself as a booming timber town. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland began to earn its reputation as a liberal paradise, encouraging cultural inclusiveness and an almost subversive political ideology.

Keep Portland Weird

Portland is wildly progressive, boasting one of the most impressive public transportation systems in the country and over 10,000 acres of public parks. Known for its temperate climate — Portland enjoys sunny, dry summers and mild, rainy winters — the City of Roses is often cited as one of the most popular places to live in the United States.

Due to its emergence as a counterculture utopia and its increased presence in American pop culture — not to mention the technology boom that began in the 1990s with companies like Intel — Portland attracts more college-educated young adults each year than most other places in the United States. Indeed, Portland’s GDP (per capita) grew more than 50% between 2001 and 2012, more than any other city in America.

Bridge City

Portland is home to numerous bridges, including Hawthorne Bridge, Steel Bridge, Broadway Bridge, Fremont Bridge, Ross Island Bridge and 2015’s Tilikum Crossing. The city is also divided into five distinctly hip neighborhoods: Southwest Portland, Southeast Portland, Northwest Portland, Northeast Portland and North Portland.

Eclectic Music Scene

Portland offers an eclectic music scene, home to artists such as Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Dandy Warhols, Everclear, Pink Martini, The Shins, The Decemberists, Elliott Smith and Esperanza Spalding. Portland is the self-proclaimed karaoke capital of America. Home to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the OMNIMAX Dome Theater, The Portland Art Museum and the Portland Children’s Museum, there’s always something fun going on for you and your family to enjoy.
